How do I quiet my mind during morning meditation and find stillness?

Lately I’ve been trying to sit quietly for a few minutes each morning, but my mind just won’t settle. It feels like I’m just sitting there waiting for the timer to go off, almost watching myself be restless. I hear people talk about a real sense of stillness, but I’m not sure if I’m doing it wrong or if I just need to give it more time. Has anyone else felt like this when they started?
