How do I know if Obsidian is making me more organized or messier than Evernote?

I’ve been trying to switch from Evernote for ages, but every time I test a new note-taking app, I end up feeling overwhelmed and just crawling back. I finally forced myself to stick with Obsidian for a full month to really give it a fair shot. I love how fast and flexible it is, but honestly, I’m still not sure if I’m using it right or if it’s actually making me more organized or just creating a different kind of mess.

Yeah that tug between speed and structure hits hard. I wanted a nimble note taking system, but every new app promises simplicity and ends up another folder pile. Sometimes the delight is in the speed, sometimes in the quiet feeling that you actually found something when you need it. What would it take to keep the habit without burning out?

Obsidian shines when you lean on backlinks and a small nucleus of notes. The problem is scale. Try a minimal setup with one daily note one inbox note and a few evergreen notes plus tags for projects and simple templates. See if the graph feels like a map you actually understand after a few weeks.

I used to think Obsidian would be like Evernote offline and simpler. Turns out it is more like a personal knowledge graph built from scratch and you need an idea of what you want to keep from the start. Maybe that is not a bug but a feature you have to learn to live with.

Maybe the real friction is not the tool but the belief that a single app can fix memory. A lot of the mess comes from trying to organize in advance when your notes should reflect what you actually do.

What if the question to ask is not how to use it right but what task a note is meant to solve right now. A few notes for a single project with a clear purpose can be enough to show benefit without turning the library into a maze.

Try a small experiment this week for note taking write three notes with a clear purpose one backlink each and no more than two tags after that check if it feels lighter
