How do I know if my AC joint pain needs imaging?
#1
I’ve been dealing with this nagging pain in my shoulder for months now, and my doctor mentioned it might be related to the acromioclavicular joint. It’s just weird how it flares up when I reach for something on a high shelf or even try to sleep on that side. I’m not sure if this is something others have experienced or if it’s worth pushing for more imaging.

That sounds really frustrating and exhausting, especially when it flares while reaching for something on a high shelf or when you try to sleep on that side. AC joint pain can behave like that, and months of it will wear you down. Have you found any position or pillow setup that gives even a tiny bit of relief?

From a diagnostic standpoint, AC joint issues come in a few flavors—sprain, early arthritis, or irritation from nearby structures. Imaging like an X-ray or MRI can help if you’re weighing injections or a second opinion, but it doesn’t always change what you do day to day. Keeping a diary of what makes it hurt might show whether imaging would actually change your plan.

Maybe the problem isn’t the AC joint itself but the tendons or posture around the shoulder. It’s easy to blame the joint when the pain shows up with a reach, but the whole shoulder girdle has to cooperate.

I get the urge to push for more tests, but months of pain without red flags isn’t automatically a sign you’re missing something big. Sometimes conservative care, posture tweaks, and time do more than another scan. If you’re worried about missing something, a second opinion could clarify it without rushing into more invasive options.

Let me flip the frame a bit: maybe this is about how you move through everyday space rather than a single joint failing. The AC joint can be a marker that your scapula and rib cage mechanics are out of balance. Addressing those patterns might change pain more than more imaging.

Pain can be a mood, a memory, and a signal all at once. When you describe it, does it feel like a dull ache or a sharp sting near the AC joint? Journaling your daily highs and lows can keep you honest about what helps and what doesn’t.
