How do I find or start a woodworking club in a small city?

I've recently gotten into woodworking and I'd love to find a local club or workshop space where I can learn from more experienced people and have access to better tools than I have at home. I've checked the library and community center boards, but most groups seem geared toward knitting or book clubs. For fellow hobbyists in smaller cities, how did you go about finding or even starting a niche hobby group, and what's the best way to gauge interest without committing to a lot of upfront cost for a space?
