How do I decide whether to post my short story for feedback or fix it first?

I'm about to share a short story I've been working on for a workshop, and I found a story critique checklist to help me prepare for feedback. The list is thorough, but it's making me second-guess everything from my character's motivation to the pacing. Is it better to just post the story as it is and see what resonates, or should I try to fix all the potential issues first?

Yeah, post it as is and ask for honest, constructive feedback on the big stuff like character motivation pacing and voice People respond when you tell them what you want to hear about rather than a general critique

Do a quick light pass first Pick two obvious issues like motivation and scene flow tighten those but keep your voice Then invite feedback specifically on those points so you don t get a full rewrite you can t do right now

Two step plan works drop Draft A now then come back a week later with Draft B that incorporates what you learned Label them clearly and show what changed Still keep the core story intact

Give readers a mini feedback map in the post one sentence on intent a short paragraph about the block and one clear thing you want help with It helps people hit the right notes instead of a free for all critique

Ask for different angles emotional resonance pacing dialogue clarity of stakes That way you get a spread of notes without turning it into a full blown rewrite pile

Imperfect drafts are the point Most folks are generous and you can frame it as a learning piece what worked what didn t and what you ll try next Shipping the story matters more than getting it perfectly right on the first try
