How did you choose a migraine preventive and manage side effects?
#1
I've suffered from chronic migraines for years, and while my abortive medication works sometimes, I'm experiencing more frequent attacks that are disrupting my work and personal life. My neurologist suggested I start a preventive treatment, but I'm hesitant due to potential side effects I've read about. For others who have navigated this decision, what factors helped you choose a specific preventive medication or therapy, and how long did it take to find one that provided significant relief without intolerable side effects?

You’re not alone. I’m not a clinician, but in my experience deciding on a preventive for chronic migraines has been about balancing potential relief with side effects and practicality. I tried a daily preventive first and felt consistently foggy, then moved to a CGRP injection schedule. It took about 2–3 months to notice fewer migraines, and the injection-site soreness was mild for me; others report more or fewer side effects, so it’s very individual.
