How can you start learning to hear leitmotifs in film music?

I was rewatching an older fantasy movie and noticed how the music changed subtly whenever a specific character was on screen, even in happy scenes. It made me want to understand the composer's intent better, so I tried reading a film score analysis, but the musical terminology was way over my head. How do you start learning to listen for these details without formal training?

Nice observation. A good starting point is to notice when the music shifts and what feeling it signals. Track moments when a character appears and see if the music changes tempo volume or instrument choice.

Try listening with the soundtrack on and the scene muted. Then unmute and jot what stands out like a small theme that keeps returning with a character. It helps you hear the pattern without getting lost in dialogue.

Keep it simple by asking three things each time you hear music. Does it get louder, does a new instrument join in, does the mood shift.

Leitmotifs are not required to enjoy this just notice patterns over several scenes a few melodies may belong to a character or idea rather than the whole plot.

Make a tiny project a sound log list the scene the character the cue the instrument and the feeling you get then compare with a later scene to see if the pattern holds.

Do not get hung up on technical terms there are short videos that explain the basics in plain language and they help you hear what to listen for in music.

Want to practice together tell me a scene and a character and we can map what cues you notice and what they seem to mean in the music?
