How can someone respectfully borrow wedding traditions from different cultures?

I'm helping plan a friend's wedding, and they want to incorporate meaningful elements from different cultures. I've been reading about traditional wedding ceremonies around the world, and the symbolism is beautiful but also very specific to each culture's history and beliefs. How do you respectfully borrow or be inspired by a tradition without accidentally reducing it to just a decorative theme or, worse, misrepresenting it?
