How can I position key light and fill for dramatic indoor portrait lighting?
#1
I'm trying to improve my portrait photography, specifically my indoor portrait lighting techniques. I have a basic speedlight and a small softbox, but my photos still look flat and uninteresting compared to professional work. I'm shooting in my living room, which has white walls and decent natural light from a large window. I want to create more dramatic, three-dimensional looks without investing in a ton of new gear right away. Can anyone recommend some simple but effective lighting setups or modifiers I should try? How do you position your key light and fill to get that professional glow?

Nice setup your window light can be your best friend for a natural look Put your speedlight as the main light at about 45 degrees to the side and add a white card opposite to fill shadows

In my living room I use the window as the soft key and bounce a second light off a white wall for fill It creates three dimensional space and keeps glare down

A simple trick is to raise the key a bit higher and angle down so the cheek gets a gentle falloff Then use a reflector lower on the opposite side to fill

If you are short on gear try a single light and a foam board or white sheet as bounce Then tweak distance to control softness and shadows
