I want to improve my gaming system performance but I'm on a tight budget and can't afford new components right now. What are the best free ways to optimize gaming system performance through software tweaks, settings adjustments, and maintenance?
I'm looking for practical gaming system performance improvements that don't require hardware upgrades. Things like driver optimizations, Windows settings, background process management, or even BIOS settings that might help. What have you done to improve gaming system performance when you couldn't upgrade your hardware?
First, clean your PC physically. Dust buildup causes overheating, which leads to thermal throttling. I clean my fans and heatsinks every 3-6 months and it makes a noticeable difference in sustained performance.
Update your BIOS/UEFI. Manufacturers often release updates that improve memory compatibility and performance. Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully - a failed BIOS update can brick your motherboard.
Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to clean install your GPU drivers. Over time, driver updates can leave behind junk that causes issues. DDU removes everything and lets you start fresh with the latest drivers.
Also, check your power settings in BIOS. Some motherboards have power saving" features enabled by default that can limit performance. Setting everything to maximum performance can help, though it will increase power consumption.
