How can I meet people as an adult in a new city?
#1
Hey everyone. So I just moved here a couple months ago and I’m realizing I don’t really know how to meet people as an adult outside of work. Back in college it just happened, but now it feels like you need a secret handshake. I joined a community garden thinking it would be a natural way to connect, but so far it’s just been a lot of polite nodding while we weed. Maybe I’m overthinking it?

I hear you moving to a new place can feel like starting from scratch It takes time to find a rhythm with strangers even in a garden club and that polite nodding is a normal stage not a failure

Try a tiny shift for the garden scene Maybe offer to lead a small task or suggest a coffee after planting day It changes the dynamic from waiting for a hello to doing something together and that can spark a real connect

Maybe you overestimate the social magic of the garden It is not obvious to me why people there are slow to talk I would have expected it to be instant camaraderie

The garden as a social school seems optimistic It may just be a place to weed and the real social life happens somewhere else I am skeptical this setup will deliver

What if the goal shifts from making friends in one space to building a few small connections over time The garden becomes a cue not the whole plan and you pick a couple venues that fit your pace

If you see this like writing a scene you could imagine one person breaking the quiet with a light question and suddenly the conversation flows Do not expect a big speech just small honest moments

Consider pairing activities like a local class a book swap or a weekend volunteer group to mix social circles This keeps things low key and you can test whether you actually want to connect beyond the garden
