How can I make observational drawings feel looser and more alive?

I’ve been trying to draw from life more, but my sketches always feel so stiff compared to my imagination work. I sat in the park yesterday trying to capture the way the light fell through the trees, and it just turned into a muddy mess. Does anyone else struggle with making observational drawings feel loose and alive?
