They can solve the equations mechanically, but they consistently have trouble translating the written scenario into the correct algebraic expressions, especially with problems involving mixtures, distance-rate-time, or age comparisons. For other educators or advanced students, what are your most effective strategies for building this translation skill? Are there specific types of algebra problems and solutions that serve as good foundational examples, or a step-by-step process you teach for deconstructing the language? How do you help a student move from recognizing keywords to genuinely modeling a real-world situation, and are there any online resources or practice problem sets you've found particularly good for developing this competency?

Two quick, practical strategies I’ve found work well: 1) define the unknowns upfront with clean letters (x, y) and write a one-sentence map of what each variable represents. 2) translate sentence by sentence using a tiny reference map (sum = to, difference = minus, total = x + y, rate × time for distance problems). Then assemble two equations and solve, checking your answer in the context of the word problem. Quick cheat sheet: “together” or “in all” → sum; “more than” → plus, sometimes difference; “per” or “each” → rate or proportion; “twice/half” → multiples.
