How can I handle a toddler bedtime regression without ditching the routine?
#1
Our two-year-old has started fighting bedtime like it's a full-time job. We have a bedtime routine for toddlers that we've followed for months, but suddenly bath time and stories just lead to more screaming and stalling. Is this just a phase we have to power through, or does the routine itself need a complete overhaul when they hit this kind of regression?

That sounds rough This phase is common as toddlers test boundaries I would keep the bedtime routine but ease into it with clear signals and a shorter wind down If bath is a battle perhaps switch to a quick rinse and shift the story to the earlier part of the routine Then end with a calm hug and lights out

Try a two step approach Make a simple two minute warning and then a short set of calm activities If the child stalls offer two choices like which book or which jammies and stick to one of them This preserves a sense of control without turning into a negotiation

Look for triggers Does the meltdown happen after bath or after you announce a big change in plan If you can reduce the number of changes in a day the bedtime feel might calm down

Use a visual timer a simple sand timer or a phone timer so there is a visible end in sight It helps a child drop resistance because they know what to expect

Keep an eye on sleep and nap timing If overtired the bedtime becomes tougher You could try shifting bedtime earlier for a few days to reset the rhythm
