How can I develop a structured approach to multi-step calculus word problems?
#1
I'm a first-year engineering student, and while I understand the concepts in my calculus lectures, I completely freeze up when faced with complex, multi-step problem solving, especially with optimization and related rates questions. I can follow a solved example, but I struggle to independently deconstruct a word problem into the correct mathematical setup and then execute the chain of derivatives or integrals needed. For students who have overcome this hurdle, what was your process for developing a more intuitive and structured approach to calculus problem solving? Did you rely on a specific problem-solving framework, and how did you practice effectively beyond just doing endless textbook problems without understanding the underlying strategy?
