How can I apply core defensive driving techniques during daily commutes after a high
#1
I recently had a close call on the highway where a car suddenly swerved into my lane, and while I avoided an accident, it shook my confidence and made me realize my reactions were purely instinctual, not trained. I've decided to enroll in a defensive driving course to be better prepared, but I want to start practicing the core principles immediately during my daily commute. For experienced drivers or instructors, what are the most effective defensive driving techniques I should consciously focus on first? How do you properly implement the two-second rule in varying traffic conditions, systematically scan intersections for potential hazards, and position your vehicle to maximize visibility and create escape routes in heavy traffic?

Nice plan. A few quick habits to start today: 1) push your following distance to at least 3 seconds (2 is baseline, but 3-4 in complex traffic). 2) make a conscious 360-degree scan every few seconds. 3) keep your hands relaxed on the wheel, breathe, and keep eyes moving so you’re not fixating on the car ahead.
