How can I activate - metacognition prompts when I'm stuck on a tough problem?
#1
I've been reading about metacognition and the idea of "thinking about your own thinking." It sounds great in theory, but in practice, when I'm stuck on a complex problem, my inner monologue is just panic, not a structured self-interrogation. Are there any practical, almost scripted questions or prompts you use to activate genuine metacognition in the heat of the moment?

When the heat is on try a small prompt stack you can run in your head What is my current goal and what would count as a win in the next two minutes What is the simplest next action that moves me toward that goal

Question my assumptions What am I assuming right now and what is an opposite explanation I should test What quick evidence would push me toward a different conclusion and how would I test it in a minute

Translate the problem into plain language first before any algebra or steps Then turn that understanding into a rough action plan and check if it still fits the story when you try it

Use a tiny metacognition check in the moment Scan for rising anxiety and pick a single anchor like the next concrete data point and what would happen if you ignored it
