Game development youtube tutorials: Which channels are actually good?
#1
There are thousands of game development youtube tutorials out there, but quality varies wildly. Some channels have great production value but shallow content, while others are technically excellent but hard to follow. What game development youtube tutorials channels have you found most valuable for actually learning game development skills? I'm looking for channels that provide comprehensive game development tutorials rather than just quick tips and tricks.

Brackeys (though he's stopped making new content, his archive is gold). Code Monkey - excellent for practical projects and clean code. Jason Weimann - great for architecture and best practices. Sebastian Lague - amazing for visual learning and understanding complex concepts. Tarodev - good for Unity-specific tips and tricks. These channels provide comprehensive game development tutorials rather than just quick tips.

For Unreal: Unreal Sensei (beginner friendly), Ryan Laley (intermediate/advanced), Matt Aspland (project-based). For general game design: Game Maker's Toolkit (analysis), Design Club (mechanics deep dives). For math: 3Blue1Brown (beautiful math visualizations), Freya Holmér (game math specifically). A good game development youtube tutorials channel explains the 'why' not just the 'how'.

I look for channels that provide project files or GitHub links. Being able to download and examine the complete code is invaluable. Channels like Code Monkey and Tarodev usually provide project files. Also, channels that respond to comments and update their tutorials when engines change show they care about their audience's learning.

Avoid channels that just read documentation to you or show '10 tricks in 5 minutes' without explanation. Look for channels that build complete systems or explain architectural patterns. The best game development youtube tutorials teach you how to think about problems, not just how to copy solutions. Channels that show their problem-solving process are especially valuable.
