Free tax software with audit support - does it exist?
#1
One thing that worries me about using free tax software is what happens if I get audited. Paid software usually comes with some kind of audit support or guarantee, but I've never seen that with free options.

I'm looking for free tax software with free audit support, or at least some kind of accuracy guarantee. I know you get what you pay for, but I'm hoping there might be some free options that stand behind their calculations.

Has anyone found free tax preparation software that offers audit defense or support? Even if it's just basic guidance on what to do if you get a letter from the IRS, that would be helpful.

This is the biggest gap in free tax software, in my opinion. Paid software often comes with audit support guarantees, but free software typically doesn't.

That said, some free options do offer basic protections:

1. FreeTaxUSA offers Maximum Refund Guarantee" - if you get a larger refund or smaller tax due using another method, they'll refund any fees you paid (but their federal is free anyway)
2. Some IRS Free File partners offer limited guarantees if you file through their IRS Free File program
3. Cash App Taxes doesn't have an explicit guarantee, but they do have help articles about what to do if you're audited

The reality is that true audit defense (where they represent you before the IRS) is almost never free. Even paid software's "audit defense" often has limitations and might not cover complex audits.

My advice: if you're really worried about an audit, either use paid software with audit protection or consult with a tax professional. Free software is great for saving money, but it comes with trade-offs.

I've never seen truly free tax software with free audit support. The closest thing might be if you qualify for free help from a VITA site or Tax-Aide program - they might provide some guidance if you get audited.

Most free software companies will point you to IRS publications or their help articles if you ask about audit support. They don't provide actual representation or guarantee their calculations.

If audit protection is important to you, you might need to consider paid options. Some of them include audit defense as part of their premium packages, though even those often have limitations.

For what it's worth, I've been using free tax software for 5 years and never been audited. As long as you're honest and keep good records, the risk is pretty low for most people.

I looked into this extensively last year because I was worried about my gig income. Here's what I found:

No major free tax software offers true audit support for free. Some offer accuracy guarantees" but those just mean they'll reimburse any penalties if their software made an error - they won't help you fight the audit.

The IRS Free File program partners might offer slightly better protections than standalone free versions, but still not full audit defense.

If you're really concerned, consider these options:
1. Use free software but keep impeccable records
2. Pay for audit defense separately (some companies offer it standalone)
3. Use a paid software version that includes it
4. Get tax professional help if you do get audited

For most people with straightforward returns, the risk of audit is very low. The IRS mostly audits high-income earners, business owners, and people with suspicious deductions.
