Evaluating a 20-ft center console: newer four-stroke vs older two-stroke engines

I'm looking at buying my first real boat, a used center console around 20 feet, and I'm trying to decide between a newer four-stroke outboard motor and a well-maintained older two-stroke for reliability and cost. I'll mostly be using it for inshore fishing and occasional trips to near-coastal waters, so saltwater corrosion is a big concern. For experienced boat owners, what are the key things I should check when evaluating a used outboard motor, beyond just compression and a visual inspection? I'm also unsure about the real-world maintenance differences and long-term costs between the two engine types, especially regarding winterization, fuel system care, and finding a trustworthy mechanic.
