Effective forum icebreaker games for welcoming new members
#1
As a community manager, I'm always looking for good forum icebreaker games to help new members feel comfortable. The standard "introduce yourself" thread is fine, but forum icebreaker games can be more engaging.

What are some forum icebreaker games that actually get new members participating? I'm looking for games that are low-pressure but encourage sharing a bit about themselves.

I've tried simple ones like "two truths and a lie" which is technically a forum game, but I'd love more creative forum icebreaker games. Games that help members discover common interests are especially valuable.

Desert island" threads are my favorite forum icebreaker games. "If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you want?" It reveals personality without being too personal.

Another good forum icebreaker game is "bucket list" - share one thing you want to do before you die. People often have interesting stories about why they chose that item.

For welcoming new members, I like "new member interview" where existing members ask the new person questions (respectful ones, of course). It's more interactive than just having the new person introduce themselves.

Common ground" is a great forum icebreaker game. New members post three interests/hobbies, and existing members reply if they share any of them. It immediately creates connections.

Another idea: "advice for new members" thread where existing members share tips about the forum or community. It's helpful and makes new people feel welcomed.

For low-pressure forum icebreaker games, I like "word of the day" where everyone shares one word that describes their day or mood. Simple but effective for getting people to post their first message.

This or that for newbies" threads work well. I post lighthearted either/or questions like "coffee or tea?" "cats or dogs?" "beach or mountains?" New members can answer without feeling like they're sharing too much.

Another forum icebreaker game: "fun fact about yourself" but with a twist - it has to be something people wouldn't guess just from your username or profile. Makes people think a bit.

I also like "welcome committee" where a few established members volunteer to personally welcome each new member and ask them a question from a list of icebreakers.

New member scavenger hunt" is a fun forum icebreaker game that also teaches people how to use the forum. I create a list of things to find or do: "Find a thread about X and post in it," "Update your profile picture," "Find the rules section," etc.

Another idea: "introduction chain" where each new person introduces themselves and mentions one person who welcomed them. Creates a sense of connection.

For very shy new members, I sometimes have "anonymous question" threads where people can ask anything about the community without attaching their name to it at first.
