Cutting down to two streaming services for quality originals and classics.

I'm feeling overwhelmed by the number of streaming services and am considering cutting back to just two subscriptions to save money. I currently have access to five major platforms, but I find myself scrolling more than watching. My tastes lean towards well-written dramas, thought-provoking documentaries, and the occasional smart comedy, but I rarely watch big blockbuster movies or reality TV. For those who have pared down their subscriptions, which two services offered you the best balance of quality original content and a deep library of older films and series? I'm trying to decide if it's better to keep a broad one like Netflix or prioritize more niche services that align perfectly with my viewing habits.

Netflix + The Criterion Channel. Netflix covers the latest prestige dramas and documentaries, plus a broad library, while Criterion Channel nails classics, arthouse highlights, and thoughtfully curated films. Together they give you strong originals plus a deep, non‑diluting back catalog without paying for a ton of channels you won’t use.

My two-sub plan was Netflix and Max. Netflix handles contemporary dramas and docs; Max adds prestige TV and a solid catalog of older films from the Warner ecosystem. It’s a nice balance if you want quality storytelling and less hunting for titles.

Prime Video + Netflix works well if you’re budget-conscious but still want variety. Prime gives you older films, international titles, and some good originals, while Netflix covers the newer, award‑winning dramas and docs. It’s broad but very practical.

If you want a more film‑focused, curated library and you don’t mind the extra cost, Max + Criterion Channel is a killer combo for your tastes. Expect a high hit rate on thoughtful drama and classic/arthouse cinema, with less noise from blockbuster fare.
