Consumer behavior research tools that don't require a PhD to use
#1
I keep reading about all these fancy consumer behavior research tools that cost thousands per month and require specialized training. Are there any consumer behavior research tools that are actually accessible to small business owners? I'm not looking for academic-level analysis, just practical insights into why customers make certain decisions. Bonus points if they're free or low-cost.

For consumer behavior research tools that are actually accessible, I'd recommend looking at session recording tools like Microsoft Clarity (completely free). Seeing how people actually navigate your site or app reveals so much about their decision-making process. It's not perfect - you're seeing what they do, not why they do it - but combined with other methods, it's incredibly valuable.

I've found that the best consumer behavior research tools are often the simplest. Create a simple survey asking people to walk you through their last purchase decision in your category. Ask about what they considered, what research they did, what finally convinced them, what almost stopped them. You won't get statistical significance, but you'll get rich qualitative insights into the decision journey.

Check out the Jobs to Be Done framework - it's more of a methodology than a tool, but it's free to learn and apply. The basic idea is that people hire" products to get jobs done in their lives. Understanding what job your customers are hiring your product to do (and what they're currently using instead) can reveal a lot about their behavior. There are free templates and guides online.
