Car maintenance fluid checks: Which fluids and how often?
#1
I'm trying to get better about checking my car's fluids regularly, but I'm not sure which ones are most important and how often they should be checked.

Obviously engine oil is important, but what about coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid? Some of these are supposed to last a long time, but should they still be checked regularly?

Also, what are the signs that a fluid needs to be changed or topped up? Looking for a simple checklist I can follow monthly or with each fill-up.

For car maintenance fluid checks, here's my monthly routine: engine oil (level and color), coolant (level and condition), brake fluid (level and color), power steering (level), windshield washer (level). Transmission fluid should be checked according to your manual - usually every 30,000 miles or so. Look for proper levels, unusual colors, or burnt smells.

I check my fluids every time I get gas. Quick visual check of oil, coolant, and washer fluid. Takes 2 minutes. For car maintenance fluid checks, the key is consistency. If you check regularly, you'll notice changes before they become problems. Like if your coolant level is dropping slowly, you can address it before overheating becomes an issue.

From a safety perspective, brake fluid is the most important fluid to monitor. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause brake failure. For car maintenance fluid checks, I test brake fluid moisture content annually and change it every 2-3 years. Coolant is also safety-critical - overheating can cause engine damage or even fire.

Don't forget about differential fluid if you have a truck or SUV with 4WD/AWD. That's often overlooked in car maintenance fluid checks. Also, some modern cars have lifetime" fluids that technically never need changing, but many mechanics recommend changing them anyway at high mileage. When in doubt, check your manual or consult a trusted mechanic.
