Car maintenance brake inspection: How to tell when brakes need work
#1
I'm trying to learn how to do basic brake inspections myself, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. I know about the squealing noise when pads are worn, but are there other signs?

How often should brake inspections be done? And what's the difference between just needing new pads vs needing rotors or calipers replaced?

Also, is this something a beginner can safely check, or should brake inspections always be done by a professional?

For car maintenance brake inspection, look for: pad thickness (should be at least 1/4 inch), rotor condition (smooth, no deep grooves), brake fluid level, and any leaks. Squealing is one sign, but also vibration when braking, pulling to one side, or a soft pedal. Beginners can check pad thickness through the wheel spokes, but for a full inspection, it's best to remove the wheels.

I get professional brake inspections every 10,000 miles. For car maintenance brake inspection, safety is too important to risk. A mechanic can measure rotor thickness and check caliper function - things you can't easily do at home. The cost is worth it for peace of mind. Brakes are one area where I never cut corners on maintenance.

When buying used cars, brake inspection history is crucial. For car maintenance brake inspection, I look for recent pad/rotor replacements and brake fluid changes. These records suggest the owner took safety seriously. If I'm selling a car, I always do a brake inspection and fix any issues first - it's one of the first things test drivers notice.

You can do a basic car maintenance brake inspection by listening and feeling. Squealing or grinding noises, vibration in the pedal or steering wheel, longer stopping distance, or the car pulling to one side when braking. Any of these mean get it checked professionally. I check mine every oil change (5,000 miles) and have a pro look at them annually.
