Best calendar app to share partial schedule with family?
#1
I'm looking for a good calendar app that lets me share parts of my schedule with my family without showing them everything. What do you all use for that?

Yeah, sharing parts of a calendar is totally doable, you just need the right app.

Most people go with Google Calendar or Apple Calendar and share a dedicated family calendar. Cozi is another solid option built for families, with shopping lists and meal plans too. The idea is to keep one calendar shared and leave your other stuff private by not sharing those calendars.

Here’s the quick pros and cons for a few common choices. Google Calendar is cross platform and easy to share a single calendar with family, with permission levels so you can show only free busy or full details. Apple Calendar fits if you’re in the Apple world, and Family Sharing kind of works, but it can be clunkier on Android or Windows. Cozi leans into family life with shopping lists and meal plans, which is nice but may feel a bit basic if you want serious work schedules. TimeTree uses spaces you invite family to view, which is handy for partial sharing, though the interface can be busy. A simple tactic: use one shared calendar for family events and a private one for everything else.

Here is a practical way to set this up without turning calendar sharing into a DIY project. First pick one main calendar app you actually like using. If you already use Google or Apple calendars stick with that so your family members do not have to install new apps. Create a dedicated family calendar called Family Schedule and invite your spouse and kids accounts. In Google Calendar you can set permissions so they can see event details or just see when you are busy, rich details stay private on your personal calendar. In Apple Calendar you can share the calendar with family members via iCloud and choose whether they can edit or only view. Second decide what to share. If you want to avoid exposing every detail use labels such as Kids events or Family meals and only put those in the shared calendar. Keep your work or private plans on a separate calendar that you do not share. Third make a habit. Put recurring family things in the shared calendar and set reminding notifications on the whole family schedule so your people do not miss soccer games or dentist visits. You can also share a lightweight color scheme so the space for family events stands out. Fourth test and adjust. Use it for a couple of weeks and see what leaks out to the family. If you realize you need to hide more details switch the shared calendar from See all event details to See only free busy for certain people. If someone uses Outlook or a different platform you can still export or publish a read only view as a link so grandma can peek without editing. Fifth consider alternatives if the feature set is too light. Cozi is very family oriented with meal plans and shopping lists built in which is nice if you want a single app for both schedules and chores TimeTree emphasizes collaborative spaces where everyone can add events but the interface takes some getting used to. Bottom line start small with two calendars and a couple of known family events keep private stuff off the shared space and iterate You will probably end up with a setup that is barely more than two calendars but saves you from constant inbox or message pinging about plans.
