Azure cloud engineer seeks practical AWS SA-Associate labs for VPC IAM EC2
#1
I've been working as a cloud engineer for about two years, primarily with Azure, but my new role requires deeper AWS expertise, so I'm planning to pursue the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate certification. I've started with the official learning path, but I'm looking for more practical, hands-on resources beyond just theory. For those who have recently passed this exam, what study materials or lab platforms did you find most valuable for understanding the practical application of services like VPC, IAM, and EC2 in realistic scenarios?

Hands-on labs made the difference for me. I leaned into Qwiklabs and AWS Skill Builder labs to actually build VPCs, IAM roles, and EC2 instances rather than just reading about them.

My go-to starter project was a small sandbox: a two-subnet VPC (public and private), a NAT gateway, a load balancer, a couple of EC2s, and a simple RDS or DynamoDB back-end. I wired in IAM with least privilege, enabled CloudTrail, and practiced cross-account access and basic monitoring. Do the exercises in a couple of regions to understand latency and failover.

Pair hands-on with IaC early. Do Terraform (or CloudFormation) templates to provision the VPC, instances, and security groups so you see how drift and updates work. Rebuild the stack from scratch a few times; it sticks.

Look at a curated course plus practice exams: Stephane Maarek's AWS SA Associate course is solid for real-world scenarios, and Tutorial Dojo practice exams help gauge readiness. Use dumps with caution—focus on understanding why answers are right, not memorizing questions.

In addition to labs, use AWS Well-Architected Labs or the Well-Architected Tool to map what you’re building to best practices like security, reliability, and cost. It helps keep your hands-on aligned with production realities.

If you want, share your timeline and what you already know well (VPC vs IAM); I can sketch a 4-week hands-on plan with labs and sample tasks to hit both knowledge targets and exam readiness.
