I manage a large, public online community for a software platform, and we're seeing a significant increase in hostile debates, personal attacks, and low-effort posts that are degrading the quality of discussion for everyone. Our existing rules feel too vague to enforce consistently, and my moderation team is getting burnt out. For other community managers, what specific, actionable rules and enforcement strategies have you found most effective for fostering respectful and productive online etiquette? I'm looking for concrete examples of how you phrase community guidelines, train moderators to de-escalate conflicts, and implement graduated consequences that actually change behavior without resorting to immediate bans for minor first-time offenses.
