I'm embarking on a major capsule wardrobe project to simplify my life and reduce decision fatigue, but I'm stuck in the planning phase because my climate has four very distinct seasons, and my work requires both business casual and at-home casual attire. I've purged a lot, but now I'm paralyzed by choosing the perfect foundational pieces that will truly be versatile across these different contexts. For those who have built a functional, year-round capsule, how did you determine your core color palette and number of items, and what specific pieces proved to be unexpectedly versatile workhorses? I'm also struggling with how to incorporate personal style and the occasional trendy item without breaking the system, and whether shoes and accessories should be counted within a strict item limit.

Keep it simple at first: pick a core palette and a small, practical item count you can actually maintain. I started with four neutrals (navy, black, beige, ivory) plus one accent color (sage), then built around 4 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 dress, 1 light jacket, 1 heavier coat, 2 layering pieces, and a handful of versatile accessories. I counted shoes in the total cap, and kept it under 34 pieces. It’s not magical, but it reduces decision fatigue quickly.
