I've been doing portrait photography as a side gig for a few months, mostly using natural light, but I recently invested in a basic two-light strobe setup to gain more control and consistency, especially for indoor client shoots. I'm struggling to move beyond flat, uninteresting lighting and want to learn classic portrait lighting techniques like Rembrandt or loop lighting, but I find the diagrams online confusing when trying to apply them to a real person. For photographers who made the jump from natural to studio lighting, what were the most practical exercises or resources that helped you understand light placement and modifier effects? I'm particularly interested in how you practiced without a model, perhaps using a mannequin or even a simple ball, and any tips for adjusting these techniques for different face shapes during an actual session without slowing down the shoot.
