I'm building a new high-end workstation for 4K video editing and 3D rendering, and I'm trying to decide if investing in the latest Gen5 NVMe SSDs is worth the significant price premium over fast Gen4 drives for my specific use case. My motherboard supports PCIe 5.0, and while the theoretical bandwidth is impressive, I'm skeptical about real-world performance gains in sustained write scenarios and whether the current generation of drives can handle the thermal throttling under my typical heavy workloads. For other content creators or power users who have made the jump, what has been your actual experience with load times, project file transfers, and application responsiveness? Are there specific brands or models you'd recommend that have robust cooling solutions, or would you advise waiting for the technology and prices to mature further before upgrading from a high-quality Gen4 drive?
Short take: Gen5 is compelling if you’re building a new, high-demand workstation and care about every last MB/s. For a lot of 4K editing and 3D rendering workloads, Gen4 drives already deliver excellent performance and are more cost-efficient. The gains from Gen5 tend to show up in sustained writes and huge file transfers, but you’ll hit thermal throttling unless you’ve got serious cooling.
