I've been mixing my own vocals for a home-recorded indie EP, and while I understand the basic concept of compression to control dynamics, I'm really struggling with the practical application and ending up with vocals that sound either too squashed and lifeless or still uneven and peaky. I'm using a decent condenser mic into an audio interface, and I've tried both serial compression and a single compressor with different attack and release settings, but I can't seem to find that sweet spot where the vocal sits consistently in the mix without losing its natural character. For those experienced with vocal production, what are your go-to vocal compression techniques for different styles, and how do you approach threshold, ratio, and makeup gain as a starting point? Do you prefer to compress on the way in during recording, or do all your dynamics processing in the mix, and what are some telltale signs you've over-compressed a vocal track that I should be listening for during my sessions?
