I'm a graphic designer with about three years of experience, and I'm preparing to apply for more senior positions, but I'm completely stuck on curating my portfolio review; I have a wide range of projects from branding to web design, but I'm unsure how to structure the narrative, what to cut, and how much process work to include without overwhelming a hiring manager. My current portfolio feels like a disconnected collection of pretty images rather than a demonstration of strategic thinking and problem-solving, which I know is what agencies are looking for. For designers who have recently successfully job-hunted, how did you decide on the optimal number and variety of projects to showcase? What format and platform did you find most effective for telling the story behind each piece, and how did you tailor your portfolio for different types of roles, like in-house versus agency positions?
Portfolios land with a clear story, not a gallery. Pick 3–5 projects that show impact, and open each with a concise problem, your role, and the measurable outcome. Lead with the strongest piece and keep the rest tightly aligned around that narrative.
Here's a practical structure: 1) Core hero project (end-to-end case study with metrics), 2) 1–2 brand/identity projects showing strategy, 3) 1 UX/product design example, 4) 1 'breadth' piece showing versatility. For each, include: problem, constraints, your approach, deliverables, results. Include before/after visuals, and a short 'What I learned' line. Front-load your best work; tailor per role by swapping in case studies aligned with the job description. In-house roles value cross-functional collaboration and product thinking; agency roles value concept-to-execution and client storytelling.
From my experience: add a 'process' or 'case-study narrative' page but keep it readable—1 page per project max, with 4-6 images. Use a consistent template. Demonstrate impact with metrics (revenue lift, engagement, conversion) if possible; if not, describe outcomes (audience reach, design quality improvements). Use a portfolio site; optional downloadable PDF; ensure accessibility and WCAG. Also run a simple 'role-fit test' by drafting mini case studies aligned with the job description.
What kind of roles are you targeting? In-house product design vs agency branding or integrated design? If you share a sample job description, I can sketch a tailored 4-project lineup and a one-page narrative template.
Two-week plan: 1) pick 4 projects that best show impact; 2) draft 60-second 'pitch' for each; 3) create a single-page 'story' per project; 4) build a clean portfolio site; 5) get feedback from 2-3 peers, revise. Then you’ll be ready to tailor for specific applications.
