Full Version: How to break free from over-blending and capture light in Impressionism?

I'm an intermediate painter trying to move from realistic landscapes into capturing light and atmosphere through Impressionism, but I'm struggling to break my habit of over-blending and detailing; my attempts at using broken color and loose brushwork just look messy and unresolved rather than vibrant and suggestive. I've studied Monet and Pissarro, but translating their approach to my local scenery feels daunting, and my color choices often become muddy when I try to layer complementary hues directly on the canvas. For artists who work in an impressionistic style, how do you train your eye to see and simplify the essential light effects in a scene? What is your practical process for planning color relationships and brushstroke direction to create that sense of fleeting moment and luminosity, and how do you know when a painting is finished, balancing suggestion with coherence?
