I've recently moved to the Denver area for a new job, and while I'm settling in, I'm finding it really difficult to meet people outside of work, especially those who share my interest in hiking and board games. I've looked at some broader apps, but they seem geared toward dating or very large, impersonal events, and I'm hoping to find or perhaps help organize smaller, more consistent local meetups for people in their late twenties and thirties who are looking for genuine platonic connections. For others who have successfully built a social circle in a new city, how did you go about finding or creating these kinds of niche interest groups? What platforms or methods worked best for you to connect with potential organizers, and what are some good practices for planning a first meetup that feels safe, welcoming, and low-pressure for everyone involved?
Denver has a surprisingly active outdoors and geek scene, so you’re not alone. Start with one small, low-pressure meetup—a mellow hike followed by coffee, or a board-game night at a cafe—then expand if the vibe fits. Use a few platforms (Meetup, Nextdoor, Facebook groups) but keep invites limited to people who RSVP so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.
