I'm planning to buy my first used car from a private seller next week, a 2015 model with about 80,000 miles, and while I'm not a mechanic, I want to do a thorough inspection to avoid any major hidden issues. I've looked up a few generic used car inspection checklists online, but they seem overwhelming and I'm not sure what items are absolute deal-breakers versus normal wear and tear for the mileage. For those who have been through this process, what are the most critical things I should focus on during my inspection and test drive? Should I be checking specific fluid conditions, listening for particular sounds, or looking for rust in areas that aren't obvious, and is it worth paying for a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic even if the car seems to drive fine?
