I've been editing my short film for the past month and feel confident about the cut and sound design, but I'm completely stuck in the color grading phase, trying to achieve a specific, cinematic look that feels both nostalgic and slightly surreal. I'm working with DaVinci Resolve and have done the basic correction, but my attempts at creating a cohesive look with power windows and qualifiers are making the footage look muddy and artificial instead of enhancing it. For colorists, what is your workflow for developing and applying a consistent grade across different scenes and lighting conditions? How do you use scopes effectively to avoid clipping and banding, and what are some subtle techniques for guiding the viewer's eye or evoking a specific emotion through color without it being too obvious?
