I've just moved into a house with a decent-sized backyard that's currently just a flat, boring rectangle of grass, and I'm feeling overwhelmed trying to come up with cohesive garden design ideas that are both beautiful and low-maintenance. I'd love to incorporate a small vegetable patch, some flowering perennials for pollinators, and maybe a seating area, but I have no idea how to lay it out in a way that looks intentional and thrives in my climate zone. For experienced gardeners, how did you start planning your space, and what resources did you use to understand scale, plant combinations, and hardscaping? Are there common beginner mistakes I should avoid, like overcrowding or poor soil preparation, that could save me a lot of time and money down the road?
