As a city planner for a mid-sized municipality, I'm leading a feasibility study on transitioning a portion of our public transit fleet to electric buses, and while the environmental benefits are clear, I'm grappling with the practical infrastructure and financial challenges. Our current depot lacks the necessary high-capacity charging infrastructure, and I'm concerned about route planning limitations due to battery range, especially during extreme winter weather which can drastically reduce efficiency. For other municipalities or transit authorities that have begun this transition, what were the most significant unexpected hurdles you encountered regarding grid capacity upgrades and bus scheduling? How did you model the total cost of ownership compared to diesel, and what strategies proved effective for securing funding and managing public expectations during the rollout?
