I've been building a freelance illustration business on the side for about a year, landing a few small client projects through word-of-mouth, but I'm hitting a wall when it comes to scaling up and finding consistent, higher-paying work. My portfolio website feels scattered, and I struggle with pricing my services competitively while also accounting for the unbillable hours spent on marketing, admin, and client revisions. For established freelance illustrators, how did you transition from sporadic gigs to a sustainable full-time income? What strategies were most effective for attracting your ideal clients, and how do you structure your contracts and workflows to protect your time and ensure projects are profitable, not just creatively fulfilling?
To tailor this, what kind of clients are you aiming for (startups, SMBs, agencies), what platforms/regions, and what tools are you comfortable with (QuickBooks, Stripe, Notion, etc.)? I can draft a starter pricing sheet and a 1-page contract you can test with a few prospects.
