I'm launching a new online forum for mental health peer support, and while I want to foster open, vulnerable discussion, I'm acutely aware of the need for clear, compassionate community guidelines to keep the space safe and prevent harmful advice or triggering content. I've reviewed examples from other communities, but I'm struggling to draft rules that are specific enough to be enforceable yet flexible enough to account for nuanced situations, especially around topics like self-harm or crisis intervention. For founders or moderators of similar sensitive spaces, how did you develop your initial community guidelines and what was your process for getting member buy-in? How do you handle the inevitable edge cases where a post violates the letter but not the spirit of a rule, and what mechanisms do you have for periodically reviewing and updating the guidelines as your community evolves?
You're not alone. Start with three core principles: safety, respect, and usefulness. Create a living set of guidelines with a quick on-boarding prompt for new members, then gather feedback for 1–2 weeks before finalizing. A short, collaborative kickoff helps buy-in and reduces pushback later.
Edge-case approach (letter vs spirit): build a lightweight decision tree. If something violates a clear rule, warn/remediate. If it's ambiguous but potentially risky or harmful, escalate to a moderator huddle. Keep a simple 4-step flow: identify, interpret, document, act; and track the outcome to inform future tweaks.
Here’s a starter 1-page guideline skeleton you can adapt. Core sections: 1) Community purpose; 2) Respectful conduct (no harassment, no sharing of confidential info); 3) Content rules (no harmful instructions, no misinformation about health); 4) Self-harm/crisis policy (offer supportive language, provide crisis resources, escalate); 5) Privacy and data handling; 6) Reporting, escalation, and appeals. Short example text for each to show tone, with placeholders for your context.
Crisis content handling (crucial): respond with empathy, avoid giving professional advice, encourage seeking professional help, and provide a list of crisis resources including country-specific hotlines. If a post poses imminent risk, escalate to emergency contacts per your policy, with documented actions and a follow-up check-in when okay. Build a one-page crisis response flow for volunteers.
Implementation and review: roll out in four weeks. Week 1–2: draft guidelines with a small focus group and publish a public draft for feedback. Week 3: run a simulated discussion to test enforcement. Week 4: publish the final version, plus a short onboarding/tutorial for moderators. Schedule quarterly reviews and solicit member input via a quick survey and a public changelog.
Tools and templates: host the guidelines in a collaborative doc (Notion/Google Docs), maintain a simple moderation decision log (post URL, rule applied, rationale, moderator, date), and create canned responses for common situations.
