I'm an aspiring concept artist trying to improve my figure drawing, and I've been doing daily gesture drawing sessions from online references to capture movement and proportion more quickly. While I'm getting faster, my sketches still look stiff and lack the fluidity and energy I see in professional work; I think I'm getting caught up in contour lines instead of capturing the essential action line and rhythm of the pose. For artists who have built a strong foundation through gesture drawing, what specific exercises or mental shifts helped you move from stiff outlines to dynamic, expressive figures? How do you balance the need for speed with maintaining a sense of structure and anatomy, and what are your favorite resources for finding challenging, varied poses to practice from?
