I'm mixing vocals for a indie rock EP in my home studio, and while I understand the basic concept of compression to control dynamics, I'm struggling to apply vocal compression techniques that sound transparent and professional rather than squashed or pumping. I'm using a combination of a hardware compressor on the way in and software plugins afterward, but I can't seem to find the right threshold and ratio settings that tame the peaks without killing the natural energy and breath of the performance. For more experienced mix engineers, what is your typical compression chain for lead vocals in a dense mix? How do you approach using multiple compressors in series versus parallel compression, and what are your go-to methods for dealing with harsh sibilance or plosives before the signal even hits the compressor?
