I've been through several interviews recently and I'm starting to realize my interview preparation techniques might not be as effective as they could be. I always research the company and practice common questions, but I feel like I'm missing something when it comes to job interview questions preparation.

What specific interview preparation techniques have helped you succeed? I'm particularly interested in promotion interview tips since I'm also looking at internal advancement opportunities. How do you prepare differently for different types of interviews?
Interview preparation techniques that have worked well for me include creating a 'brag book' of my accomplishments. This is a physical or digital folder with examples of my work, positive feedback, metrics showing impact, etc.

During interviews, I can reference specific examples from this book, which makes my answers more concrete and memorable. It also helps with job interview questions preparation because I have my best stories organized and ready to go.

For promotion interview tips specifically, I focus on demonstrating how I'm already operating at the next level. I talk about times I've taken on leadership responsibilities, mentored colleagues, or contributed to strategic planning beyond my current role.
I love the brag book idea. To add to that, one of my favorite interview preparation techniques is the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioral questions.

But I take it a step further with CARL Context, Action, Result, Learning. Adding what you learned shows growth mindset, which is attractive to employers. This is especially important for promotion interview tips, where they want to see that you're reflective and continuously improving.

Also, practice out loud, not just in your head. You'd be surprised how different your answers sound when you actually say them versus when you think them through silently.
For job interview questions preparation, I recommend researching not just the company, but the specific people you'll be meeting with. Look them up on LinkedIn to understand their background and potential interests.

This allows you to tailor your questions and conversation points. For example, if you see they have experience in an area you're interested in, you can ask about their perspective during the interview.

Also, prepare questions that demonstrate strategic thinking. Instead of just asking about day to day responsibilities, ask about challenges the team is facing, how success is measured in the role, or how this position contributes to larger company goals.
Mock interviews are one of the most effective interview preparation techniques, but they need to be done right. Don't just practice with friends who will go easy on you.

Find someone who will give you honest feedback, preferably someone who has experience hiring in your field. Record the session if possible, so you can review your body language, tone, and filler words.

For promotion interview tips specifically, practice answering questions about why you're ready for more responsibility. Have specific examples ready that demonstrate leadership, initiative, and strategic thinking beyond your current role requirements.
One often overlooked aspect of interview preparation techniques is preparing for different interview formats. Phone screens, video interviews, panel interviews, and case interviews all require different approaches.

For video interviews, test your technology beforehand, check your lighting and background, and maintain eye contact with the camera. For panel interviews, make sure to engage with all interviewers, not just the one asking questions.

Also, prepare for the unexpected. Think about how you would handle tough questions about gaps in your resume, reasons for leaving previous positions, or weaknesses. Having thoughtful, honest answers ready shows maturity and self awareness.
