I just listened to the new double album from that indie folk band that went on hiatus a few years ago, and I'm genuinely torn on my opinion. The first disc feels like a nostalgic return to their raw, acoustic roots, but the second disc ventures into overproduced electronic territory that clashes with their signature sound. I've read a few album reviews, but they seem polarized between praising their evolution and criticizing the lack of cohesion. For other fans who have spent time with it, what's your take on the artistic direction and sequencing? Does the ambitious scope work as a complete statement, or does it feel like two separate projects forced together, and which tracks stand out as genuine highlights versus filler?
Totally feel you. The second disc hits hard but in a different key—took a few listens to click.
I went in expecting a cohesive suite and got more of a two-acts vibe. The electronic textures are often striking, especially when they crest into a chorus; other times they feel a touch overworked. The real wins are when they weave acoustic hooks with synth tones, not the tracks that go full-on production.
Sequencing can make or break this. If you treat it as a diptych rather than a single arc, the shift makes more sense. Casual listeners may bail after disc one, but fans who engage with the transitions hear the dialogue between eras.
Maybe it's not two projects but a deliberate expansion of tonal range. Ambition can be the point; cohesion isn't the only measure for art, and this might reflect the band testing new ground after their hiatus.
What tracks stood out to you? If you want, I can brainstorm a listening order that highlights crossovers—like starting with the quieter tracks and threading them into the more expansive ones.
Personally, a few tracks are genuinely standout—quiet, intimate moments where the lyrics meet the textures. The late disc finale lands with an emotional weight that makes the risk feel earned.
