Full Version: How do long-time Steam users manage a backlog and find indie gems beyond top sellers

I've been a Steam user for over a decade and my library has grown to several hundred games, but I'm starting to get frustrated with the platform's discovery features and the sheer volume of my unplayed backlog. The storefront feels increasingly saturated, making it hard to find genuinely interesting indie titles beyond the big seasonal sales. For other long-time users, how do you manage and curate your Steam library effectively? Do you use categories, wishlist limits, or external tools to track what you actually want to play, and what strategies do you use to navigate the store to find quality games that aren't just the top-sellers or heavily promoted titles?
Weekly 15–20 minute store audit. I keep two collections: “To Play” and “In Progress” and filter out Top Sellers unless they fit the vibe.
I track backlog across tools: IsThereAnyDeal for price history, HowLongToBeat for rough playtime, and a simple Notion/Trello board with stages: Backlog, Shortlist, Playing, Paused. I mirror that structure in Steam Collections (Indie, RPG, Co-op) to avoid store clutter.
Workflow example: define the vibe you want (cozy, tense, sci‑fi), make 4–6 tags, then search Steam with those tags. Build a short-list of 4–6 games per vibe, with two indie “hidden gems” and one “safe bet” big title. Keep a one-page note for each game: goal, why it fits, expected playtime, and why you’d drop it if it doesn’t deliver. Revisit every month and prune those you won’t touch.
I’d also look beyond indie vs mainstream; some mid‑tier publishers release under‑the‑radar quality titles. Don’t avoid big studios entirely; check out their smaller releases or experimental branches. Use community‑curated lists rather than relying solely on Top Sellers.
What’s your preferred play length and co‑op style? Do you want short sessions (1–2 hours) or longer campaigns? Are you okay with single‑player experiences you can share via streaming or scoreboard? Any platform constraints (Windows/Mac, controller support)?
A small practical tip: hide games you already own that are installed or on sale; use Steam’s categories and hide DLCs to reduce clutter.
