I'm planning to do my first brake pad replacement on my front wheels this weekend; I've watched several tutorials and feel confident about the process, but I have a few specific questions before I start. My main concern is about properly retracting the caliper piston on my car, which has an integrated electronic parking brake—do I need a special diagnostic tool to put it in service mode, or is there a manual override? Also, for those who have done this job, what's the best method for cleaning and lubricating the caliper slide pins without contaminating the new pads, and how do you judge if the rotors need resurfacing or replacement when they're within thickness spec but have some light scoring?
Quick safety note upfront: most cars with an integrated electronic parking brake require a service procedure via a diagnostic tool to retract the caliper piston. There isn’t a universal manual override, and forcing the piston can damage the EPB, ABS, or caliper. If you can’t confirm the exact procedure for your model from the owner's or service manual, it’s worth calling a dealer or a shop before you proceed.
