I'm a freelance graphic designer working on a branding project for a new wellness startup, and I'm struggling to finalize the color palette. The client wants to evoke calm and trust but also energy and innovation, which feels like conflicting directives within color theory. I've presented several options based on traditional associations, but they feel either too passive or too aggressive. For other designers, how do you navigate client requests that seem to oppose basic color psychology? What strategies or tools do you use to explain your choices and find a harmonious compromise, and are there any resources you recommend for exploring more nuanced or unconventional color combinations that still feel cohesive and purposeful?
Totally get the tension. A practical way forward is to anchor the palette on a calm base and use color psychology as accents. For example: a desaturated blue-gray or sage as the main color to convey calm and trust; an warm accent like coral or peach for approachability; and a bright accent (electric teal or vivid orange) to signal energy and innovation. Keep neutrals (white, warm gray, charcoal) as the backbone so everything feels cohesive. Apply the accents sparingly—in UI, callouts, buttons, or illustrations—and test a few screen comps with the client and a small user group before locking in.
