I've been practicing watercolors for a few months and I'm completely frustrated with my attempts at painting loose, expressive landscapes—my skies always turn into a muddy, overworked mess when I try to layer colors for clouds, and my foregrounds lack depth because I'm afraid of adding darker values. I think my paper choice might be part of the problem, as it buckles easily, but I'm also unsure about the timing for wet-on-wet versus wet-on-dry techniques. For painters who have mastered a more fluid style, what's your process for planning and executing a layered landscape wash? How do you control water-to-pigment ratios to maintain transparency, and what are your strategies for preserving clean whites or lifting color to correct mistakes without damaging the paper surface?
