I'm a biology teacher trying to develop an accurate and engaging unit on modern genetics, and I want to explain the fundamental principles of CRISPR-Cas9 to my high school students without oversimplifying or causing unnecessary alarm about its ethical implications. I understand the basic mechanism of guide RNA and Cas9, but I'm struggling to find clear analogies and resources that differentiate between somatic and germline editing in an accessible way. For educators or science communicators who have tackled this, what frameworks or activities successfully conveyed both the revolutionary potential and the serious societal questions surrounding this technology? How did you address student concerns about designer babies versus legitimate therapeutic applications without getting bogged down in hype or fear?
